The town was abuzz with chatter. Ponies from all over Ponyville were gathering outside the town hall, hoping to catch a glimpse of the people who entered or left the building. But their anticipation would have to wait as the ceremony had yet to begin.
It had been many months since news had reached the town, that a wedding would take place. An what a wedding it would be. The pegasi, under Rainbow Dash's instructions, had cleared the skies above town of any clouds that might rain today. As such, they could not have chosen a more gloriously sunny day on which to hold the proceedings.
And the wedding was not the only exciting news for the townsfolk. For rumour had it that a very important pony would be conducting the ceremony. Princess Celestia herself was arriving n town to marry the lucky couple, alongside her sister Luna. That in itself was gossip-worthy info. The two princesses had not set hoof in Ponyville since the changeling incursion a year ago. And many were grateful that their arrival was on such a happy occasion this time.
And the rumours appeared to be true, for in the skies above town, ponies could see many pegasi guards, from both the day guard and the night, arriving near the town hall. Behind them followed the chariots of the two princesses. The ponies of the town bowed dutifully as their monarchs exited their transport and moved towards the hall. They gave the crowds waves, as was customary, before making their way inside. The two gave each other smiles as they entered, knowing just how special this day was.
She stood there, looking intently at the mirror in front of her. Twilight gazed at her reflection, never expecting that she'd end up on a day like today. She was in on of the back room of the town hall, and was wearing the dress Rarity had made for her.
It was very similar to the outfit that Rarity had made for her night at the Grand Galloping Gala a couple of years ago, albeit with far more white. She had yet to put on her veil yet and was too distracted to think about doing so. All that she could think of was just how massive this day was for her and Dusk, who, per tradition, had not seen each other all day.
Her other friends had all been fitted for their own dresses to serve as bridesmaids, much as they had done for her brother's wedding. And she'd just heard that Princess Celestia and Luna had arrived. No doubt they were preparing for the ceremony. All of her closest friends and family would be watching. Twilight had never had trouble being in front of large groups, but on a day like today, she allowed herself to be nervous.
Her attention was drawn from the mirror when she heard a creaking sound. Turning, she saw the door to the room open. There, on the other side, was an older mare with a big smile on her face. Twilight returned the smile as the mare approached.
"Hi Mom." Twilight said affectionately.
Mrs Sparkle opened her mouth to speak, but one look at Twilight in her wedding dress very nearly brought her to tears. Twilight had to resist the urge to roll her eyes at this. This was pretty much the same reaction when she'd found out Twilight was getting married. Instead, she placed a hoof on her mother's shoulder.
"It's okay. I'll be fine Mom."
Mrs Sparkle wiped a tear away from her eye before replying.
"I know you will honey. I'm just....I'm just so happy for you. Ever since you came to Ponyville, so many things have happened to you. You've faced many dangers, overcome obstacles no other pony would even dream of trying to do."
Twilight listened quietly as her mother spoke. It was true, she had changed so much, done so much, since moving to this town. It was hard for her to even think of what her life was like before she came here. But after everything she'd been through, she knew deep down that she would not want to change a thing.
"There were times I worried for you Twilight. Times when I wondered if....if I'd never see you again. Times I worried that you might not have a day like...."
With tears still in her eyes, Twilight's mother smiled again.
"...a day like today."
Now it was Twilight's turn to get teary-eyed. The two mares, both in that same moment, utterly broke down and embraced each other. neither of them could remember the last time they'd spent any quality time with each other like this. It seemed like ages when they finally parted from each other, their eyes practically red with the tears they'd shed.
"Your father and I are so happy for you. We love you Twilight, and we always will."
Twilight, her eyes still somewhat wet, replied with a shake in her voice.
The hall was practically deafening with all the voices talking to each other. Even though Twilight and Dusk had agreed to invite only a few ponies to the event, nearly everypony in town had come to see the wedding. The inside of the hall however, only had their closes friends and families. Zecora, Lyra, Bonbon, Derpy, Octavia, Vinyl, the Mayor, Mr and Mrs Cakes, AJ's family as well as a few others, all lines the hall waiting for the big moment. At the front were Twilight's parents, who, like everypony else here, were talking to each other, excited at the prospect of their daughter's wedding.
At the end of the hall stood princess Celestia. By her side were Twilight's five closes friends, all decked out in their bridesmaid outfits, especially made by Rarity for the occasion. Closest to Celestia was Cadence, serving as the mare-of-honour. On Celestia's other side was her sister Luna, Spike, who once more was charged with bearing the rings, and next to him were Shining Armour and the groom himself, Dusk.
Both stallions had garbed themselves in traditional black tuxedos, yet another creation of Rarity's. Dusk was breathing rather heavily, no doubt nervous about what was going to happen. It was not lost on the best stallion, Shining.
"Relax. Believe me, I know what you're going through." He said.
Dusk gave a small smile at his soon to be brother-in-law.
"I know. it's just...I can't believe it's really happening. Me and Twilight. How do I look? Is the suit on right?"
Shining chuckled. It was not so long ago that he too stood in that same position, waiting for his own bride to walk down the aisle. He knew every worry, every ounce of nervousness Dusk was going through right now.
"I'll be fine Dusk. Just remember, whatever you're feeling, after today, you'll spend the rest of your life with Twilight."
Dusk dwelt on that thought. His smile grew as he considered it. to spend the rest of his life with that mare. clearly it was good advice on the part of Shining as, in an instant, his fear practically vanished.
And it was fortunate that they did when they did, for the chattering of the hall was instantly silenced by the sound of the organ blaring. The pony at the keys began playing the tradition "here comes the bride" music. Everypony stood from their seats and turned around, looking at the main doors of the hall. They opened and there, on the other side, were three small fillies, throwing flower pettles down the aisle. Applebloom, Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle had done this once before, at Shining and Cadence's wedding. And here they did exactly as before.
But the crowds attention was drawn to who was following them.
Twilight Sparkle walked gracefully down the centre of the hall, gaining admiring looks and smiles from all who saw her. Dusk, once he looked upon her in her wedding dress, felt a sense of happiness that he had not felt since the day she'd said "yes". And from the looks of the expression on her face, he knew she felt the same way.
Twilight approached the end of the hall and looked upon her mentor, Celestia, who now looked down on her with joy and pride in her eyes. Twilight took her place in front of the princess, as did Dusk, and the music died down, signalling to all there to sit back in their seats. Once there was silence, Celestia began to speak.
"Citizens of Ponyville, we are gathered here to witness the union of two extraordinary ponies, to be bound together in holy matrimony."
She looked over to Twilight.
"Twilight Sparkle. A mare who has proven herself to be a pony of courage, integrity and unrelenting love and compassion, who has saved our land many times."
Twilight smiled with pride over her mentor's praise. Celestia then turned to Dusk.
"And Dusk. One who may not have been born as one of us, but has more than earned his place amongst the best and bravest of Equestria. A stallion who stood against evil because of the love he felt for Twilight."
It was now dusk's turn to feel pride. There had been many times when he'd secretly wondered about the choices he'd made. There was a time when the ponies in this hall would have been looked upon as nothing but food. His decision to turn away from that life had been the biggest decision anyone could have made. But looking over to his bride, and seeing that smile on her face, that smile which warned his heart, he knew that he was absolutely right to have done what he did.
The bride and groom turned their attention back to Celestia, who continued.
"Dusk. Do you take Twilight Sparkle to be your lawfully wedded wife. To have and to hold, in sickness and in health. Through good times and bad. So long as you both shall live?"
Dusk looked at Twilight and Gazed into her beautiful purple eyes. He had never been asked an easier question.
Twilight had to once more resist the urge to shed tears, but continued smiling nonetheless."
"And do you, Twilight Sparkle, take Dusk to be your lawfully wedded husband. Through light days and dark. Through harmony and chaos. So long as you both shall live?"
Twilight looked upon the smiling stallion in front of her and spoke.
"With all my heart...yes."
Dusk's eyes began to water from sheer happiness, something which Twilight was beginning to do as well. But their attention was once more drawn to Celestia's voice.
"May we have the rings please?"
Spike stepped forwards and held up the cushion with the two golden rings placed on them. They glowed with Celestia's magic and hovered over Twilight and Dusk's horns. After the rings were placed upon then, Celestia spoke again.
"Then by the power vested in me as princess of the sun, I now pronounce you to be stallion and mare."
She then turned to Dusk.
"You may kiss the bride."
As if the two actually needed permission. They leaned forward and the moment their lips touched the entire hall erupted with cheers and applause from their family and friends. Many were now weeping with joy over this, not the least of which were Twilight's five friends and her mother. After what seemed like an eternity, the two newly-weds broke apart from each other, eyes still watery, and faced the crowd, who were still cheering.
Twilight looked over to her friends, and then to her family, all of whom were clearly overjoyed at all this. She then looked behind her to the two princesses, who gave her nods of approval. She then looked over to Dusk, now her husband, and saw that he was offering her his hoof.
"Well? Shall we?" He asked.
Happily, Twilight placed her own hoof in his and the two walked back down the aisle together, still being cheered on. As they reached the end the doors were opened for them, and they were greeted by an even louder roar of applause from the townsfolk who had gathered outside. Giving each other somewhat embarrassed looks that their wedding, which had been planned to be small, had grown so large.
But in truth, they didn't care. For today had turned out exactly as they had hoped. Better even. As they looked back to each other with looks of joy on their faces, they gave each other another kiss, ignoring the hoots from the crowd as they did so. As they pulled back from each other, they knew, without words, that this was, without a doubt, the happiest day of their lives.
The combination of music and chatter was loud to say the least. Almost all of Ponyville had come out for the post-wedding party and it was as spectacular as had been promised. Ponies were singing and dancing all over the place. Twilight's friends were mingling with the guests and her parents were talking over with Shining and Cadence.
Twilight meanwhile was looking among the crowd for her mentor. Soon though, she caught sight of the princess and went over to speak with her. Celestia saw Twilight approach and broke off her conversation with Luna. The moon princess saw Twilight come near and allowed Celestia to go off. After all, Luna had an important task to perform.
"Thank you for that wonderful ceremony Princess." Twilight said happily.
Celestia smiled at the praise.
"There's no need to thank me Twilight. After all the years we've known each other, it was my honour. And how have you been? I imagine this is all rather a lot to take in."
Twilight could not deny that. Even after the wedding, the reality still hadn't quote sunken in yet. but she was happy regardless.
"I'm happy princess. Everything's just as perfect as I'd hoped it would be."
Celestia smiled, pleased that this was her student's feelings on the matter. The princess looked around, as though trying to find someone.
"And where is your hubby? I'd thought he'd be here with you right now."
Twilight pointed to the other side of the crowd.
"My family wanted to talk with him. He's part of our family now and they wanted to give him a proper welcome. In truth they had to practically pry him off me. He's been by my side all evening."
The princess nodded.
"Well, I'm sure both you and he will find much joy in being part of each other's lives."
Twilight smiled. She opened her mouth to speak again, but turned around as she heard a familiar voice call out to her. Turning around, she saw Dusk trotting towards her. Once together, they held hooves and Twilight kissed him on the cheek in greeting.
"What is it Dusk?"
Dusk turned and pointed over to where Twilight's family were.
"Your brother told me that something special was going to happen. But he wouldn't say what."
Twilight tilted her head in confusion. She hadn't heard of anything else that was supposed to happen tonight. She faced her mentor once more, who now had a rather mischievous grin on her face. Twilight knew her long enough to know that there was no prying any info out of her if she wanted to keep a secret. Sighing, she turned back to her husband.
"I guess we'll just have to wait."
They both then heard Celestia speak up.
"Not for long."
Before Twilight could ask what she meant by that, she was distracted by the sounds from the crowd. They were all sounding like they'd seen something amazing. Turning, Twilight and Dusk looked up into the sky, and what they saw took their breath away.
The clouds of the evening had been blown away, revealing the night sky which had now occurred. And what a sky it was. Princess Luna had surely outdone herself. The moon was big and bright as usual, but in addition to this, there was an aurora blazing across the deep blue of the sky. It was as though there was a rainbow right in the middle of the night. And if that weren't enough there was a stream of shooting stars.
The whole sight was absolutely beautiful. It practically brought tears to Twilight's eyes to look at it. She turned to Dusk, who was clearly moved by this wonderful gift from the princess.
The two could have stared at it all night, but they turned as they heard a familiar flapping of wings. Luna was landing gracefully next to her elder sister, with a look of pride on her face. Twilight approached and bowed, as did Dusk.
"Thank you princess. I cannot tell you how much this means to us. Your night-sky is beautiful".
Luna bowed in return, clearly pleased that she had made them so happy.
"Think nothing of it Twilight. It's a little something I've been meaning to show for some time now. I thought tonight was probably the best night to show it. A beautiful night sky to commemorate this special day for the both of you.".
Twilight smiled back at her before facing her husband once. More He smiled back and moved next to her, brushing his head against hers. They did not say a word, for no word needed saying. They simply enjoyed this moment,
And so, with Dusk's foreleg wrapped around her shoulders, Twilight looked back up at the astonishing night sky, grateful for all of her friends who had made this day so special for her, and knowing deep down, that many more happy days were to come.
